Skin Cancer Screenings at Trinity Springs Middle School

Keller, TX – December 21, 2011 – Dr. R. Todd Plott of Dermatology Alliance-Keller, held a skin cancer awareness seminar December 13 at Trinity Springs Middle School. The one-hour event included individual skin exams for 13 teachers and staff members. Dr. Plott volunteered his time as a free service through the American Academy of Dermatology.

According to Dr. Plott, the message is important because unprotected sun exposure is the number one cause of skin cancer, but is highly curable if detected early. Dr. Plott also left skin cancer prevention literature and posters at the school to share the information with students.

“As a dermatologist and parent, I cannot stress the importance of wearing sunscreen daily and especially when being outdoors for several hours,” says Dr. Plott, noting other factors that contribute to skin cancer include family history and skin type. “I am passionate about educating people how to prevent skin cancer, as well as informing them of the warning signs and the need to get checked annually.”

Each skin cancer exam takes approximately 10 minutes and is essential to detect any form of melanoma or suspicious lesion that requires a biopsy. With 30 years of experience and expertise as a skin care specialist, combined with 20 years of clinical research, Dr. Plott is able to provide the best possible treatment for the three main types of skin cancer: melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. In addition, he offered these skin cancer prevention tips to those in attendance:

  • use water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more
  • wear protective clothing
  • seek shade
  • avoid tanning beds

For an extra layer of protection from the sun’s damaging UV rays, Dr. Plott offers Heliocare, a dietary supplement with antioxidant properties which helps the skins ability to fight off UV rays, at Dermatology Alliance Keller.

“My staff and I enjoy performing this community service and building a relationship with the local schools,” Dr. Plott comments, noting he will be visiting other schools in 2012.
